October 25: Commitment Sunday

Taking Steps, Matthew 8:23-27; 14: 25-31
Two storms on the same lake. In the first, Jesus is asleep in the boat while the disciples panic. In the second, Peter climbs out of the boat and walks toward him on the water. This is Commitment Sunday, when we bring our pledges for 2027 forward together. We don't know what next year holds, but we know who called us, and that's the reason we give. We hope you'll be with us.

Generations
Differences in age and experience can make it feel like people of other generations are living in completely different worlds. Understanding—or even talking with—one another can be hard. Yet if we are open, God offers a way through these impasses: a community that embraces both wisdom and innovation, where we can grow up and go gray, and where our differences become blessings rather than barriers.
November 1: All Saint's Day

Generations: Standing on the Promises, Luke 2:25-38
As every generation stands together in the hope of Christ, bearing witness for God's enduring promise, their gifts and experiences become a blessing to all. As we read the story of Simeon and Anna, encountering the baby Jesus, we see the importance of witnessing to new generations about the hope and promise we have in God. Today, we will also take time in service to remember those from whom we have received the gifts of love and grace, and whose lives shaped our lives. Come and remember your loved ones through prayer and lighting of candles.

Generations: I'm Really Listening, 1 Samuel 3:1-18
God speaks through every generation, as evidenced in this story of Eli and Samuel. God calls Samuel, and Samuel keeps coming to Eli, believing he is the one who is calling him. After listening to one another, they realize it is God calling Samuel. When we humbly listen to one another—whether the truth comes as comfort or challenge—we make space to hear God's voice more clearly.

Generations: Formed and Freed, 1 Timothy 4:6-16
In this letter to his mentee, Paul encourages Timothy to continue doing the work God has called him to do, without having anyone look down on him for his youth. As Christians, we are called to form and free one another—to ground others in faith and then release them to use their gifts boldly for God's new work, regardless of our age.

Generations: Where You Go, I will Go, Ruth 1:1-18
The story of Ruth and Naomi is one of the most poignant examples of an intergenerational relationship we have in the Bible. Ruth chooses to continue her life journey with Naomi. They care for one another and cling to one another. We are reminded that God calls us to belong to one another—not for what we can do, but for who we are—choosing steadfast love and companionship across generations, even when life feels empty or uncertain.

Beginning with the End, Mark 13:24-37
We enter into Advent with apocalyptic scripture: the sun and moon darken, stars fall, the heavens are shaken. We get the feeling that something major is coming. Something big. Something disruptive. Something that will change everything. As we enter into Advent, this season of great anticipation, we explore what it means to prepare ourselves and keep watch for the one thing that will change everything.
